Food Combinations to Avoid

I had the pleasure of working in an Ayurvedic Medicine study recently and I’m fairly new to the studies but I feel overjoyed every time I come to a new understanding of something so important! Here’s a little of what I’m studying for myself. In Ayurvedic medicine it is taught that spices and herbs are often added in different foods to make them compatible or even to ease certain effects of a dish with an incompatible combination. We find many intidotes in food for food! For example potatoes (my absolute favorite now and always) can cause gas build up or upset stomach. When added with ghee and black pepper though it can combat those negative effects. Sometimes our bodies become accustomed to certain combinations that would normally be aggravating to the system though too! Each body is different and every circumstance changes. Learn how to eat to your own specific needs and you can experience life in a different way, in a healthy way. Here are a few food combinations that might be better to avoid.

  • Beans - Avoid- fruit; cheese, eggs, fish, milk, meat, yogurt

  • Eggs - Avoid- fruit, especially melons; beans, cheese, fish, kitchari, MILK, meat, yogurt

  • Fruit - Avoid Avoid- As a rule, with any other food. (There are exceptions, such as certain cooked combinations, as well as dates and milk, which have the same rasa, virya and vipaka.)

  • Grains - Avoid- fruit; tapioca Honey - Avoid- According to ancient Ayurvedic literature, honey should never be cooked. If cooked, the molecules become a non-homogenized glue that adheres to mucous membranes and clogs subtle channels, producing toxins. Uncooked honey is nectar. Cooked honey is considered poison.

  • Hot Drinks - Avoid-mangos; cheese, fish, meat, starch, yogurt

  • Lemons - Avoid- cucumbers, milk, tomatoes, yogurt

  • Melons - Avoid- EVERYTHING – especially dairy, eggs, fried food, grains, starches. Melons more than most fruit should be eaten alone or left alone.

  • Nightshades, e.g., potato, tomato - Avoid- melon; cucumber, dairy products

  • Radishes - Avoid- bananas, raisins; milk

  • Tapioca - Avoid- fruit, especially banana and mango; beans, raisins, jaggary

  • Yogurt - Avoid- fruit; cheese, eggs, fish, hot drinks, meat, MILK, nightshades

Remember, like I’ve said, every person is different. So you have to first understand your body before taking the next steps towards your own health.
