Food & Consciousness

Through Ayurveda we are taught how to make our lives happy. It teaches us this through a cosmic consciousness. There is a beautiful and amazing awareness that comes with the Ayurvedic teaching. The more aware you are of your body and the connectivity in everything the closer you become to bliss. When you become aware of the knowing in emotions stored in the fat cells and survival responses being scribed in the white matter of the brain and the idea of breath and life being present in everything you do, see, and touch you begin to view the world around you in a different way. A shift occurs. And once you know it you can’t un-know it. A lot of people think that Ayurveda is just knowing your dosha and eating to it. It’s so much more! And without the rest of it only eating to your dosha is not enough. It’s about awareness, happiness, a perfect sync in your body, mind, and consciousness with the natural world, and more than that, it’s about understanding that you are me and I am you and everything is connected. This understanding is so beautiful and such a peaceful place to sit.

With food though, it’s important to know that cooking is an art. Cooking is based on Ayurvedic principles. There is the taste, the energy heating and cooling, the post digestive effect, and the dynamic action on the cel membrane and our inner DNA. This has a direct action on our consciousness. Proper food is medicine and a kitchen is a sacred place. I view my kitchen as a temple. I wash my hands, I keep it clean, and I thank the space before, while, and after I use it. With food we can find connection in countless ways. It’s not something that should be quickly partaken in and then you run! It’s a ceremony of sorts. Sit. Enjoy your food. Put your electronics away. Turn the news off. Breathe. Close your eyes. Taste your food. This is a taste of mindfulness. Make this a routine and you’ll come to the first understanding of being present and appreciating a moment. That’s where this connectivity begins.
