Ghee is a clarified butter that’s know for its anti-inflammatory, digestive, and therapeutic properties. It’s considered the purest essence of the earth element. In Ayurveda it’s played a key role for hundreds of years. It can assist in the removal of environmental toxins through a process called “lipophilic-mediated detoxification.” Thats when the ghee attaches to the toxic fats and helps pull them out of the body. Ghee can be used daily, in cleanses, and in fasting to receive all kinds of benefits!

Ghee contains Butyric acid, which is also naturally occurring in our gut and helps your body absorb nutrients from the food you eat. It is good for improving memory and lubricates the connective tissue. Ghee makes the body flexible and, in small doses, is tridoshic. Ghee pacifies pitta and vata and is acceptable, in moderation, for kapha. Because ghee possesses anti-inflammatory properties it helps control allergies, arthritis, and auto-immune conditions. It’s also used to improve ocular (eye) health!

Using ghee in a cleanse especially a seasonal one can reboot your gut! Just to give you an idea of the standard 4 day cleanse this is about what the schedule looks like. At the first of each morning you drink alternating amounts of melted ghee.

Day 1: drink 2 tsp melted ghee.

Day 2: drink 4 tsp melted ghee.

Day 3: drink 6 tsp melted ghee.

Day 4: drink 8 tsp melted ghee.

You would have 3 NONFAT meals per day (No Snacking). Following a nonfat diet of seasonal vegetables, fruit and kitchari. Eat a light breakfast, a big lunch and a light and early dinner. And make sure you get all the water you need! Sip warm-hot plain water every 10-15 minutes and drink half your healthiest body weight in ounces of plain, room-temp water per day. And of course be careful to practice daily stress-relief routines and lots of self care. The whole point of cleansing is to be healthy and to be healthy means to take care of yourself. If you’re considering a cleanse be sure to do the research and know what you need before diving in!
